Special Education

Specialized instruction and support for students with disabilities, delivered alongside their classmates whenever possible.

Support in a shared classroom

At American Prep, we believe every child learns best when included with their peers.

APA was founded by parents who wanted their children with special needs to grow and thrive without the limits of labels. That conviction still shapes our program: students receive the support and specialized instruction they need while staying in the classroom with their peers as much as possible.

  • Least Restrictive Environment (LRE). Students learn alongside their classmates, with support brought to them whenever possible.
  • Specialized instruction built around each student’s individual goals.
  • Parents on the team. Families help shape their child’s plan and goals.

Utah’s Best of State

20212022

American Prep’s Special Education Program was honored with Utah’s Best of State Award in 2021 and 2022, recognizing our commitment to inclusive education and exceptional student support.

How Support Works

Special education services follow the federal Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) and Utah State Board of Education rules. Here’s what the process looks like for families.

  1. Share a concernIf you think your child may have a disability that affects learning, contact our Special Education team or your child’s teacher. You can request an evaluation in writing at any time.
  2. EvaluationWith your written consent, a team evaluates your child’s needs to determine whether they qualify for special education services.
  3. Your child’s IEPIf your child qualifies, you and the team build an Individualized Education Program (IEP) with goals, services and supports.
  4. Progress & reviewYou’ll hear about progress during the year. The IEP team meets at least once a year to review the plan, and students are re-evaluated at least every three years.

Contact & Records

One email reaches APA’s Special Education office, for questions about services and for records requests.

Special Education Records Retention Notice

Each year on July 1, American Preparatory Academy disposes of the special education records of students who left APA five years earlier. Until that date, former students or their parents can request copies of these records with proper identification.

To request records before the disposal date, email the Special Education office at specialeducation@apamail.org.
