Nutrition Program Policies

Ordering & Payment / Pedidos y Pagos

Ordering
Families participating in the school lunch program must pre-order meals at least 6 days in advance. All school lunch orders include milk. Parents who send a lunch from home may also pre-order milk for their students, also at least 6 days in advance. We encourage families to order as far ahead as the menu allows. We make every effort to serve the lunch you ordered, but occasionally your student will be offered an alternative that meets nutritional requirements and accommodates any dietary restrictions on file.

Receiving Meals
The school does not receive any reimbursement when a meal is not received by the student. Students who are at school but fail to pick up their lunch three or more times over a two-week period may have future lunch orders canceled until the student and parent/guardian meet with a school director and receive approval from the food service director. If meal orders have been canceled, students are welcome to go to the lunchroom to request an available meal.

Cancelling Lunches
Our lunches are made 24 hours in advance, so we must have at least 48 hours notice to cancel a meal. To cancel meals, contact lunch@apamail.org.

Refunds
Canceled meals can be credited to your school lunch account. No cash or credit/debit refunds.

Meal Charges
It is the responsibility of the parent to provide a lunch or pre-order lunch for their student(s). If a student arrives at school without a lunch or with insufficient food to eat, the school lunch staff may offer a school lunch. The meal charge (if applicable) will be added to the student's account. The lunch staff will notify the parents of the meal charge.

If your student has food allergies or dietary restrictions that you would prefer we NOT serve them a school lunch, please notify lunch@apamail.org.

Allergy Accomodations / Adaptaciones para Alergias

In accordance with the National School Lunch Program and USDA guidelines, American Preparatory Academy provides an equal opportunity to participate in the school lunch program for students with food allergies or conditions that impact food consumption. Parents will disclose student health conditions, including food allergies, during registration. Parents must also contact lunch@apamail.org to order special meals through the school lunch program. Once the student is set up to receive special meals, parents can order normally.

All items in the school lunch program are nut-free. Gluten-free, dairy-free, and egg-free meals are included on the regular menu. Other allergies are accommodated as needed.

If your child needs a food accommodation that requires changes to the NSLP meal pattern, please complete a Special Diet Form. Return the completed form to your school's front office or email it to lunch@apamail.org. Our food service manager will work with school directors and the school nurse, and will follow the student's 504 plan where applicable.

Nutrition Standards / Nomas de Nutrición

Beverages
Students are encouraged to bring a water bottle and drink water throughout the day. Water is available via drinking fountains and refill stations. Milk is included with the purchase of a school lunch, and is available to be purchased separately for students bringing a home lunch. The following beverages are not allowed at school: drinks with red dye (they will stain the carpets), soda, and drinks containing stimulants of any kind, including caffeine or herbal stimulants.

Sale of Food and Beverages
All food and beverages sold on campus during the school day (from the start of the day through 30 minutes after dismissal) must meet the Smart Snacks in School nutrition standards, as required by the NSLP. Each campus may apply for up to three exemptions per year, as allowed by USBE. To request an exemption, the school director must complete the Fundraiser Exemption Form and submit it to lunch@apamail.org. Completed forms are kept with other National School Lunch Program records.

American Preparatory Academy does not participate in the sale of foodstuffs to students from vending machines.

Concessions and other food sold or distributed after school hours, for fundraisers or special events, are permitted. Caffeinated sodas and energy drinks are not allowed to be sold or provided to students on the school premises.
